Forex Pip Value Calculator

A pip may look tiny on the chart, but it is where risk lives. This free forex pip calculator converts any lot size on any major pair into its exact dollar value — the number every trading platform expects you to know before you click buy or sell.

Rates are indicative mid-market snapshots for illustration — your live broker quote may differ slightly. JPY pairs use 0.01 pip size; all others 0.0001.

1. Nominal APY vs. Real Post-Inflation Yield

A common pitfall in yield farming and staking is prioritizing high nominal APY percentages without factoring in baseline network token inflation. For instance, if a network offers 14% nominal staking rewards but dilutes circulating supply by 10% annually, your real purchasing power expansion is only ~3.6%.

2. Liquid Staking Derivatives (LSTs) & Capital Efficiency

Liquid staking protocols (such as Lido stETH, Rocket Pool rETH, and JitoSOL) allow institutional participants to maintain yield generation while retaining liquidity for DeFi lending and liquidity provision. However, LSTs introduce smart contract and depeg risk that must be modeled into portfolio variance.

How Pip Value Calculation Works

A pip ("percentage in point") is the smallest standard price move in forex — 0.0001 for most pairs, 0.01 for yen pairs. Knowing your pip value is how you translate chart moves into dollars, and it is the missing link between your stop-loss distance and your risk per trade.

The pip value formula

Pip Value = Pip Size × Contract Size × Lots ÷ Exchange Rate (if needed)

On EUR/USD, one standard lot (100,000 units) gives 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10 per pip. On USD/JPY at 151.20, it is (0.01 × 100,000) ÷ 151.20 ≈ $6.61 per pip — the same lot size, a different dollar risk.

Why pip value matters

Pipettes

Most forex brokers now quote fractional pips ("pipettes") — a fifth decimal place. A move from 1.08500 to 1.08510 is 1 pip; to 1.08501 is 1 pipette (0.1 pip).

Forex Pip Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pip in forex trading?

A pip is the standard unit of price movement: 0.0001 for most currency pairs and 0.01 for yen pairs. If EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0860, that is a 10-pip move.

How much is 1 pip worth in dollars?

It depends on the pair and lot size. One standard lot of EUR/USD = $10 per pip; one mini lot (0.10) = $1 per pip; one micro lot (0.01) = $0.10 per pip. Use the calculator above for exact figures on any pair.

Why does pip value differ between currency pairs?

Because the quote currency differs. Pairs quoted in USD have a fixed $10/lot pip value; pairs like USD/JPY must be converted at the current exchange rate, so their dollar pip value moves with the rate.

How do pips relate to lot size?

Linearly: double the lots, double the pip value. A 20-pip stop on 2 standard lots of EUR/USD risks $400 (20 × $10 × 2).

Should beginners care about pip value?

Yes — it is the foundation of risk management. Never place a trade without knowing your dollar risk: pips of stop-loss × pip value = dollars at risk.
