Forex Lot Size Explained
Lot size is the volume knob on your risk. Turn it without understanding and a normal 50-pip move can erase a week of gains. Here is exactly what standard, mini, micro, and nano lots mean in dollars — and the formula pros use to size every position.
1. Nominal APY vs. Real Post-Inflation Yield
A common pitfall in yield farming and staking is prioritizing high nominal APY percentages without factoring in baseline network token inflation. For instance, if a network offers 14% nominal staking rewards but dilutes circulating supply by 10% annually, your real purchasing power expansion is only ~3.6%.
2. Liquid Staking Derivatives (LSTs) & Capital Efficiency
Liquid staking protocols (such as Lido stETH, Rocket Pool rETH, and JitoSOL) allow institutional participants to maintain yield generation while retaining liquidity for DeFi lending and liquidity provision. However, LSTs introduce smart contract and depeg risk that must be modeled into portfolio variance.
Lot Sizes in Forex Explained
A lot is the standardized unit of trade size in forex. Choosing the right lot size is how you control risk — the same 50-pip move risks $500 on 1 lot but only $5 on 0.01 lots.
The four lot sizes
- Standard lot = 100,000 units. EUR/USD: $10 per pip.
- Mini lot = 10,000 units (0.10). EUR/USD: $1 per pip.
- Micro lot = 1,000 units (0.01). EUR/USD: $0.10 per pip.
- Nano lot = 100 units (0.001). EUR/USD: $0.01 per pip — offered by select brokers.
How to choose your lot size
Work backwards from risk: Lots = Risk $ ÷ (Stop pips × Pip value per lot). With a $100 risk budget, 50-pip stop, EUR/USD: 100 ÷ (50 × 10) = 0.2 lots. Our forex margin calculator handles the full position math including leverage.
The 1–2% rule
Risk no more than 1–2% of your account per trade. On a $5,000 account, that is $50–100 max — which on EUR/USD with a 50-pip stop means 0.1–0.2 lots.
Forex Lot Size — Frequently Asked Questions
What is a lot in forex?
A lot is a standardized trade size: 1 standard lot = 100,000 units of the base currency. Mini (0.1), micro (0.01), and nano (0.001) lots allow smaller positions.

On EUR/USD, 1 standard lot = $10 per pip of movement. The dollar value scales with lot size and varies by pair.
What lot size should a beginner use?
Micro lots (0.01) or smaller until you are consistently profitable — risk stays under a few dollars per trade while you learn.
How do I calculate the right lot size?
Lots = risk amount ÷ (stop-loss in pips × pip value per lot). Or use our forex margin calculator to do it automatically.
Can I trade fractional lots?
Yes — most brokers allow any size like 0.37 lots, giving precise control over risk on any account size.
